What do these things have in common? Quite a lot it turns out.

Search engine giant, Google has a history of releasing major updates to its search algorithm and giving them a name. Here’s just a few of the names from over the years:

Panda
Penguin
Hummingbird
Payday Loan
Caffeine
Vince
Buffy
Dewey
Jagger
Fritz

What’s an algorithm?

An algorithm is just a fancy way of describing the steps Google’s computers go through to figure out how to index and rank webpages so that when you search for the perfect recipe for tonight’s dinner, you get the webpages with that recipe returned to you.

Google continously tweaks and updates its search algorithms. It’s a never ending battle to improve their product and to keep spammers from showing up ahead of legitmate websites.

There are a lot of companies out there that will promise to improve your search engine ranking. Many of them are legitmate companies, but an awful lot of them are no better than the spammers themselves. They will try to take advantage of a loophole or weakness in Google’s algorithm to improve your website’s ranking. Trouble is, Google makes an estimated 400-600 minor “tweaks” to its algorithm every year and, as we saw above, regularly releases major updates (with interesting names).

The bottom line is this, if you want your website to show up well in Google here’s a few Golden Rules:

  1. Be a real company
  2. Have a real product or solution
  3. Be able to verify items #1 and #2
  4. Have a clean, well designed, fast loading website
  5. Make sure you have plenty of useful, relevant content on your website that speaks to your client audience
  6. Engage your clients and potential clients with well-designed and maintained social media sites
  7. Associate your website and social media sites with people who also have an online reputation (LinkedIn profiles, articles written by them)
  8. Don’t play games

The last item is important. Every time Google realizes someone is trying to game the system, they not only update their algorithm to remove that capability, they will actively “punish” a website using those tactics by lowering their ranking.
